Our Team

Dr. Jessee Valentine, DO

Who I Am

I am a double board-certified psychiatrist in adult and child & adolescent psychiatry. I completed my residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and my fellowship at Yale University.

I provide an integrated approach that combines medication management and psychotherapy to help people address psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma-related concerns, and OCD.

I also work with patients navigating emotional challenges, life transitions, and deeper questions of identity, purpose, and meaning.

My approach to psychiatry focuses both on carefully treating symptoms and on understanding the patterns, beliefs, and experiences that shape how people think, feel, and live. I believe meaningful change often occurs when people are given the space to explore their inner world with curiosity, honesty, and support.

In our work together, my goal is to create a nonjudgmental and supportive space where people can gain clarity, develop resilience, and move toward a more integrated and meaningful life.

I am particularly interested in the intersection of mental health, personal growth, and the deeper questions that arise as people reflect on their identity, values, and direction in life.

Like many people, I have also experienced grief, major life transitions, and periods of uncertainty while navigating the search for meaning, identity, and belonging. These experiences deepened my appreciation for the strength people carry within them and the courage it takes to grow through life's challenges.

Outside of my clinical work, I am grateful to share my life with my two wonderful children, two curious cats, and a loving and supportive family. I enjoy teaching, reading, cooking, creative projects, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Why Developmental Training Matters for Adults

Training in child and adolescent psychiatry provides a deeper understanding of how emotional and psychological patterns develop across the lifespan and continue to shape adult mental health.

My training in child and adolescent psychiatry provides a strong developmental perspective on human behavior and the factors that influence emotional and psychological growth over time. This perspective allows me to view adult concerns not only in terms of current symptoms, but also within the broader context of developmental experiences, relationships, and life transitions.

Rather than focusing only on present difficulties, a developmental approach considers how patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating evolve throughout the lifespan. This can help illuminate the roots of many challenges adults face and support a more comprehensive approach to treatment.

Professional Experience

I have worked across a wide range of psychiatric care settings, including outpatient clinics, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, specialty psychiatry clinics, county mental health centers serving underserved populations, and urgent-care mental health settings.

My experience also includes providing psychiatric consultations in hospitals, emergency departments, and schools.

In addition to clinical work, I have served as a mentor for early-career psychiatrists and as a clinical supervisor for physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and therapists.

In addition to private practice, I serve as Medical Director of Rising Up, an intensive outpatient program focused on holistic, evidence-based mental health care.

Therapeutic Approach

My therapeutic approach is integrative and flexible. I provide evidence-based medication management and optimization, while also incorporating psychotherapy into treatment.

In psychotherapy, I draw from multiple modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), and depth-oriented approaches.

I also consider the role of personal values, meaning, and spiritual perspectives when relevant, tailoring care to the needs and goals of each individual.

How I Show Up

"I strive to be genuine, compassionate, and nonjudgmental in my work with patients. Nothing someone shares about their past or present changes how I feel about them as a person. I understand that life can be deeply challenging, and that people's choices and behaviors often reflect what felt necessary or possible at the time."

My goal is to create a space where patients feel safe speaking openly about their experiences, knowing they will be met with curiosity, understanding, and respect. I believe meaningful change often begins when people feel truly understood rather than judged.

Compassionate Presence

I walk alongside you with empathy, respect, and genuine care as you reconnect with your own resilience.

Guide, Not Director

I see my role as a guide who helps you discover your own answers, not someone who tells you how to live your life.

Mind-Body-Spirit Integration

I believe healing involves the integration of mind, body, and spirit. Emotional health is closely connected with physical health, relationships, personal values, and a sense of purpose and meaning.

How We Approach Care

Collaborative + Evidence-Based

Care decisions are made collaboratively. We use established psychiatric and psychotherapeutic approaches guided by current evidence as well as your individual goals and preferences.

Mind-Body-Spirit Integration

Mind-Body-Spirit Integration

When it supports your goals, care may also incorporate mindfulness, nutrition, movement, or spiritual perspectives alongside evidence-based psychiatry and psychotherapy.

The self is always evolving; it's not a fixed place to arrive, but a lifelong process of becoming — of discovering, integrating, and expressing the parts of yourself that feel most genuine as you continue to grow and change.
